10 questions to ask yourself before buying something new, how not to make impulse buys

With a new season ahead, buying new clothes is always tempting. These 10 questions are here to help you cut through the influence of ads and TikTok trends to decide whether you really love something, or if it’s just another impulse buy.

Taking time to slow down and ask yourself questions before buying new clothes is something we can all do more of. Here’s a good place to start if you’re kicking off your conscious consumer journey:

  • Did I know this item existed a day ago? A week ago?

  • Will I still want this item in a week? A month? What changes if I don’t buy it today?

  • Did I like it before I saw it on a conventionally attractive influencer?

  • Does it match the vibe of other styles I like or do I like it because I’ve seen it 10 times on my FYP?

  • If this item suddenly went out of trend or wasn’t by a certain brand, would I still be excited to wear it?

  • Could I see myself wearing it in 5 different outfits? What about 10 different outfits?

  • Is it made of an ethical material? How long will this item last, realistically?

  • How long can I see myself wearing this item? Could I see myself wearing this in 2 or 5 years?

  • Could I find this item second-hand?

  • Am I buying this because I’m feeling a bit down and looking for a quick way to boost my mood?
