How to Find Your Personal Style with Whering

By Florenne Earle Ledger published 09/01/2025

how does climate change our personal style?

Do you ever feel suffocated by micro trends telling you what to wear and how to dress? Same.

The evolution of trend culture

What’s “cool” changes so fast, it’s almost like a twenty-four-hour news cycle. It’s exhausting to keep up with. I remember flicking through my mum's copy of ‘What Not to Wear’ as a child in the 00s—that was bad enough; now, I’m having to delete Instagram for weeks at a time just to clear my head. I always end up redownloading it….I’m not that disciplined.

It started with TV shows, books, and magazines blatantly shaming us into wearing what “worked” for our age and body type, now, it’s a constant stream of fashion commentary in the palm of our hands. One-size-fits-all advice isn't as popular anymore, but we're still sold the idea that we need lots of new clothes to become a better version of ourselves.

After years of yearning for certain clothes that were on trend as a teenager, I can finally say I don’t want to buy things just because they are trendy or by a certain brand. Knowing my wardrobe and what I feel my best in has helped me remember what’s important when buying new clothes, making it easy to avoid trends that don't align with my sense of self. That doesn’t mean I’m less “cool” than anyone, it just means some trends are not my style.

Finding your personal style with Whering

With the new year in full swing, I’ve seen *lots* of discourse about finding your personal style and how important it is, and whilst I agree, it’s no easy task. Style isn’t a destination, it’s a journey 💅 The journey is exactly why Whering is a great tool to find your personal style. You can experiment with fashion without having to spend lots of money on new clothes and get personalised insights into what you're actually wearing.

Step one: Audit

Take stock. Review what you own, either in your physical wardrobe, or your digital one, and see which items you wear and what you don’t. If you haven’t digitised your wardrobe on Whering, now might be the perfect time!

Which items do you wear out of necessity? Which pieces make you feel confident and excited? What do you avoid wearing, and why?

Make a note of your most worn and least worn items, whether this is by adding them to a Lookbook on Whering, or jotting it down in a notebook, make sure you have it noted.

Step two: Inspire yourself

Now time for the fun bit! Think about what actually inspires you. Don’t just open TikTok and scroll until you find someone wearing an outfit you like, look elsewhere for your inspiration. What colours do you like? What kind of styles are you drawn towards (not just in fashion but in home wear, branding, book covers, etc). What are the stylistic similarities between visuals that appeal to you?

Once you’ve defined this, maybe it’s time to open socials and browse your saved folder to see what outfits you’ve liked in the past.

I find the Moodboard feature on Whering ideal for collating my inspiration, so I can pull up pictures when creating outfits in the canvas, and use different prompts to encourage me to style better outfits from my current clothes.

Step three: Compare

How does your inspiration compare with your most and least worn items? Does your style accurately reflect what you find inspiring, or is there a disconnect?

If there is a disconnect, why is that? Are you lacking the confidence to wear what you love? Think about it.

If you use Whering to schedule your outfits, it’s so easy to view your least and most worn items either in stats or by filtering your wardrobe. Start scheduling your outfits this year to get personalised insights that make developing your style super easy.

Consider donating or selling items that don’t feel right for you. Maybe a friend would like them? Maybe you could get some extra cash on Vinted for things you’re not loving?

If your clothes do align with what inspires you, that’s exciting! You can see a clear link between your taste and the clothes you wear, so now you’re ready to explore more within your newfound niche.

Step four: Experiment

With new learnings of what inspires you, it’s time to find new combinations from items you already own that you know and love. Dress Me is the perfect way to discover new outfit ideas from your current wardrobe. You can even create Lookbooks based on different occasions or “vibes” and filter to them in Dress Me to refine the selection of items and find more specific looks.

Shuffle your wardrobe

Get friends involved! IMO, most things are better with friends, so why not add your besties on Whering and start styling each other? You might even find new ways to style old items.

Invite friends!

Step five: Stay inspired

Continue tracking outfits in the Planner and reviewing them and your stats to see what items you’re enjoying wearing that week, month, etc. Track your style journey, and notice how you lean towards some items more often during different months. See how your mood impacts what you want to wear, or your social calendar. Noticing changes in what you wear from your current wardrobe is a perfect way to shop your own wardrobe to know what will make you happy next time you’re stuck on what to wear.
