Unpopular opinion, but I am here for the darker evenings and cloudy skies. I might not feel the same in a few weeks when the novelty has worn off, but I have always loved this time of year.
With a new season comes new shopping temptations. Every time the weather changes, we’re compelled to buy more clothes for the new version of us about to drop. It feels like I’m constantly in a loop of hating everything I own but never quite committing to changing my style, all thanks to the sheer amount of options and new trends constantly making me question my taste.
I’m not going to bore you with why that’s problematic, but instead offer solutions of how to feel like you’re dressing differently for autumn without having to buy new clothes.
If you’re a recovering shopaholic, check out our recent article on how to develop long term sustainable fashion habits. With everything from deleting shopping apps to swapping clothes with friends, we’ve got you covered in detaching yourself from all the adverts and influencers telling you to buy more.
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but your wardrobe is fine as it is. We may not see it on social media, but it’s normal to re-wear the same things year after year and it’s more than achievable to wear slay worthy outfits from clothes you’ve had for 4+ years. Especially with Whering!
The whole concept of loving what you already own instead of buying new is exactly why Whering was invented. There are so many ways to use the app to shop your closet, let us show you how.
If you’re undecided on what to wear and you feel like you’ve been wearing the same few outfits for the last couple of months, why not filter Dress Me to one of your Lookbooks? It’s a more streamlined version of Dress Me as you can shuffle pieces that fit the particular vibe of your chosen Lookbook.
It’s Cher’s wardrobe from Clueless bought into the 21st century. Simply open the Styling tab and tap the sliders icon in the top left corner to apply filters.
If you’re so undecided that even filtering Dress Me to a Lookbook is too much to think about, why not shuffle all your outfits completely. It’s like shuffling a playlist but way more fun. Head to the Planner tab and tap ‘shuffle my outfits’ to see what we suggest.
Alternatively, if you’re looking for an outfit suggestion that’s less random, why not choose the ‘Discover new outfits’ option, also in the Planner. We’ll suggest an outfit based on your previous styling choices that we know you’re going to love. It takes all the stress out of getting dressed and guarantees you’ll look great.
Keep in mind that this feature is BETA which means we’re still working on perfecting it, bear with us!
When you track your outfits on Whering you can see your most and least worn items. Getting that newness fix from what you already own is made so much easier by our least worn filter. It’s like reaching into the back of your closet to find something you forgot you owned, but on your phone. See and style all your pieces and shake the need to buy new with Whering.
It’s very obvious that layering is an easy way to transition into a more autumnal look. We chatted with our in house stylist about her tips for transitioning into autumn style.
We may not be certified stylists, but we have a few tricks up our sleeve. Here are some of our favourite ways to layer up:
My friend did this the other day and I was obsessed. She wore a black pinstripe maxi skirt under a long denim skirt with a slit. It was a full look. There’s no need to put away thin and flowy maxi skirts in the winter months when you can layer them up. I can’t believe I haven’t seen this before. It instantly levels up the outfit and helps you wear your summer clothes all year round.
The waistcoat trend is a big yes from me. Love how this traditionally masc style has been feminised in recent years, but who’s to say it’s only a summer/going out number? I mostly see waistcoats worn as a replacement for a top, but when it’s a little cooler out, why not layer it over a long sleeved top for an autumn appropriate serve?
It’s basic maths!
I haven’t seen anyone pull this off as well as Lara Adkins, but the way she pairs trousers and skirts together is iconic. It’s a Y2K moment, but regardless of whether it’s in trend or not, if you’re brave enough to do this we’re applauding you and your style. It can look so great when done right and it lets you wear your summer skirts in the cooler months, keeping your legs a lot warmer than a pair of tights would.
That’s how we’re staying clear of seasonal sales and shopping our own wardrobe this autumn. Good luck to all the sustainable fashion besties trying to do the same. Tell us how you get on: Twitter and Instagram @Whering__.
