Black Friday and the environment are somewhat arch-enemies. Impulse buying encouraged by flash discounts is exactly what our planet doesn't need. But...the sales can be tempting. If you're guilty of enjoying a little retail therapy, this is our guide on how to indulge in the sales whilst keeping conscious consumption at the forefront of your mind.
Make sure you’re buying clothes you truly love, that you can imagine wearing day-to-day.
I find reviewing my stats on Whering to see which colours and styles I've been loving before buying new clothes is really helpful. It reminds me of the core elements of my personal style, so when I'm thinking about buying something, I can be extra sure it aligns with what I've actually been wearing. Too many times, I've bought something just because I quite like it and it's a bit cheaper than usual, and it's sat at the back of my wardrobe, rarely ever worn. A discount is not enough of a reason to buy something!
Before Black Friday rolls around, I will be adding everything I've got my eye on to my Whering Wishlist. When the sales are underway, I already know where I'm looking and I won't be sucked into impulse buying things I don't need.
Track what you already own (by digitising your wardrobe, obviously) and see if there are items you don't have that you actually need.
I'm always drawn to buying jackets or trousers, but I try to remind myself I already have far too many of each. It would be more beneficial to invest in a new pair of shoes or a good quality jumper, items that I don't own that I know I'd wear a lot.
I'll be keeping an eye on brands I usually can't afford, to see if any items I know would be a great quality investment are a little more affordable this Black Friday. Buying clothes made to last is a great way to be more sustainable, but despite the fact I support prices reflecting the labour that went into the garment to ensure workers are properly paid, the high price point can be a barrier for some of us. Black Friday is a good time to grab items that will last a lifetime for a reduced price! Choose carefully.
There are so many good Black Friday deals that extend beyond clothing, like gym memberships or discounts on rail cards. Black Friday is the perfect time to make practical purchases and invest in things that will make your life better, and save you money while you’re at it.
Supporting independent businesses is infinitely better for the planet than feeding the fat cats. If you have some things in mind you want to get from the Black Friday sales, shop small wherever possible!
Buying Christmas presents is always expensive, I like to check out the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales for any bargains on gifts I know my loved ones will enjoy!
