Recently, I’ve seen a carousel trend going around on TikTok with people sharing Autumn wardrobe essentials to add to your cool-weather rotation. All sorts of things ranging from trench coats and suede jackets, to warm-coloured sambas and knee-high boots. With our whole motto being all about using what we’ve already got and discouraging ourselves from seasonal hauls, we thought we’d put our own spin on it. Five things you need in your Autumn wardrobe which aren’t clothes. All intended to refresh and make your existing items feel brand new.
Autumn/Winter means pulling out our favourite wool and cashmere jumpers. It also means finding some devastating little holes you didn’t know were there, a result of a moth attack. Did you know that herbal soap bars can act as a moth repellent? The scent of certain spices and oils actually repel moths, so either place a bar in your wardrobe, drawer or cupboard, or add a few shavings here and there to keep your knits intact.
Knits bobble. It’s natural. It happens. The best way to suppress the need to buy a new wardrobe when a new season rolls around is to keep your existing wardrobe looking fresh and sleek. Treat your jumpers to a little spa day and debobble them. They’ll be looking brand new!
A steamer is great for any season and occasion (hello, summer linens), however it can be a really great tool to have in your arsenal when the weather starts to cool down. Be honest, when’s the last time you washed your coats and jackets? No judgement, me too. A steamer is a great way to give your outerwear a much-needed refresh, kill any surface bacteria, or remove any unwanted odours without having to wash the entire thing or take a trip to the dry cleaners. You can also finish off with some fabric spray for a fresh smell. I’m personally a big fan of the Kair one!
Safety pins are great. They’re my year-round wardrobe holy grail. I have a few skirts which I like wearing low-waist sometimes, and I always keep a safety pin on hand if I ever want to alter the waist-line and pull it up.
Safety pins are a great way to play around and experiment with the shape of your clothes, like taking in a shirt, a jacket, a blazer, anything. They’re also a great tool to use if you want to add a little charm to your jumper or coat. I have a set of necklaces I usually wear every day, however, especially in colder weather, they’re usually left hiding under my turtleneck. On those days, I take the charms off the necklaces, loop them onto a safety pin, and pin it onto whatever I’m wearing!
I know you probably saw this one coming. I had to. As with most of these, the Whering app is a great tool to have year-round. But since this is an autumn round-up, let’s focus on autumn.
I sometimes find cold-weather outfits a little bit more difficult to make exciting or feel stylish in, which is controversial, I know- usually people prefer it over summer. What I always find helpful is scrolling back on my Whering calendar, and seeing what I was wearing around this time a year ago (or two, or three), and seeing how I can update some of the outfits with new pieces I’ve gotten over the years, or to better fit my style now.
