Christine Aasama has been a long-term Whering user– so it was a pleasure to sit down with her and hear about how she views her personal style as a form of self-expression that’s constantly changing.

Wearing a pair of leopard-print tights, combat boots, a lace dress passed down to her by her mum 10 years ago, a denim trench where the belt was used as a tie, and a vintage fur hat, Christine is someone who is unapologetically and quintessentially herself at all times.

In a world dominated by so many fleeting online trends, we LOVED hearing how Christine stays true to herself without putting her style in a box.

Can you describe your style in 3 words?

Maximalist, Vintage, and Alternative

Why did you choose those words?

The reason I chose those three words is because they cover so many parts of my life. I have always been a little emo scene girl with my metal-head-ness. I have also loved vintage fashion from the 1920s to the 1940s. I started singing jazz as well so a lot of cabaret influence comes into that. I just love things– so maximalist is completely my vibe. From patterns, to colours, to just overexaggerated-ness.

How has your style evolved over the years?

Since I was a kid my mum used to dress me up. She used to give me modelling classes, I’ve done the typical little sailor outfit as a baby. When I started to get into my teen years and the internet became vastly available, I got into emo stuff, goth stuff, and kind of experimented through scene stuff. I then went into a more hipster style. There were practically three months where every single week I had a new aesthetic, so I feel like I have tried a lot of stuff out.

I love looking at trends and picking and choosing what I love. My style has evolved with things that I like and dislike, and it always keeps changing. I can never say no to anything.

What does personal style mean to you?

Personal style to me means expression. It almost feels like I’m doing different characters and that I have alter egos. From going to a fancy thing to a vintage thing, to a metal-head scene– and even just a cosy vibe. I feel like those are different parts of me and I am showing the world who I am.

Where do you get your inspiration?

I get my inspiration from loads of different places. From music to TV, to Anime, to seeing what my friends are wearing. Even looking at nature, looking at flowers, looking at paintings and architecture. I find that all of it inspires me.

Do you have any advice for people trying to find their style?

I feel style is all about trial and error, sometimes (most times), you’ll look back and be like “what the hell was I wearing” but it is all a story. You need to start from somewhere to lead to somewhere. You can’t just have good style or personal style from the beginning. It’s just going to keep going wherever your life goes.

Would you consider sharing your wardrobe with friends?

I would definitely let my friends look into my wardrobe and share clothes, shoes, accessories, everything. I almost feel like my friends come over, they go straight to my closet and just play dress up. I find that me and my friends' wardrobes are quite different but there are elements that are similar.
