As soon as the clocks go back, the looming threat of shorter days becomes reality, and the cooler, darker evenings start to take their toll. Whilst there’s no denying sunny weather makes everything better (including my outfits), there are things I have been trying this autumn to offset the negative energy from the change in season.

Here’s how I’m dressing to feel good this autumn and winter.

Get styled by friends

Dressing for yourself is key, but a little confidence boost from your friend never hurts. That’s why it’s so much fun getting styled by your besties! Invite them to join you on Whering and they can put outfits together for you. Getting styled by someone else is a novelty, especially when they use items you already own so you can actually wear the outfit. You might be surprised by what they pair together and see your wardrobe with a new perspective.

My friends kept styling outfits for me with an old top I’d not worn for ages. I was surprised so many people kept reaching for it as I’d had it for years and not been wearing it much. It definitely encouraged me to wear it more rather than leave it to collect dust.

Shuffle your wardrobe

Lean into your personal style

Wearing clothes that feel like “you” will never fail to bring joy to your day. If you’re not certain about your personal style, there’s no time like the present to find out what makes your fashion sense unique to you, so you can tap into this and enjoy your getting dressed daily.

If you’re unsure where to start, try asking yourself these questions to get to know yourself better.

Don’t wait for an occasion

As I work from home, I often find myself rotating my a selection of items in my wardrobe that I like, but I don’t LOVE. I usually save my favouirte items for the weekend, or a weekday when I have plans. I’ve decided to stop doing this and enjoy wearing clothes I love, even if I am staying in the house and working all day. There is no need for me to save the clothes I love most for weekends, when I could feel better about myself throughout the week in my working life.

Find your niche and maximise it

In the same vein as finding your personal style, spend time thinking about what elements of your style bring you the most happiness. For me, it’s when I find a good pattern clash that contrasts but also matches in some way. If I want to feel good about an outfit, I'll always make sure it’s got a good clashing element just so it feels fun.

Layer up

Just because it’s cold, doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your skirts, dresses and mini jackets. I always dress practically because I don’t find the cold to be worth it, but I’ve been enjoying layering multiple tights, or long-sleeved tops, rather than bundling up under baggy clothes all the time. Not a hot take or a new hack, just something you should do if you haven’t already!
