5 Ways to Spice Up a Basic Outfit

By Nona Dimitrova published 18/08/2024

There’s nothing wrong with wearing a ‘basic’ outfit. Whatever your style may be, some days we just want to throw on a pair of jeans, a t-shirt and some comfy trainers and get on with whatever it is we have to do. But even on days like those, we might be left feeling like something is a little too basic. So how can we spice up a fool-proof outfit without making a whole fuss about it?

Enter five of our favourite ways to spice up a basic outfit, on days where we just need that little extra oomph. As always, take it with a grain of salt (or your spice of choice).

1. Add some texture

Texture is a great way to add something visually interesting to an outfit. You’re essentially keeping the ingredients the same, but adding a little bit of unexpected physical depth to what you’re wearing.

2. Swap out for a colour

Whoever said your basics can’t include colour, was seriously disturbed.

White t-shirt, blue jeans, a black blazer... it’s a classic for a reason. But we’re here to add a little something. Just changing the colour of the t-shirt creates something so much more visually interesting.

3. Add a pattern

Similarly to colour, adding a patterned element shows effort, even though minimal effort was put in.

4. Swap for something unexpected

One of our favourite ways to spice up a basic outfit is by keeping the base of the outfit the same, and swapping out one of the items for something which is a little unexpected. Be that a top with a little volume or frill, a cool jacket, or a different pair of shoes, your closet is your oyster.

5. Add accessories!

When in doubt, stack on the accessories. Personally, I’ve been obsessed with collecting vintage brooches recently, and always add them to my blazer’s lapel.

Like, you can't tell me this doesn't look phenomenal.
